Film Review: A Serious Man

From the dark comedy kings, Joel and Ethan Coen, comes a deliciously dark and witty film about fate, death, God and serious misfortune. Set in a Jewish community in the mid 60’s, A Serious Man tells the story of Larry (Stuhlbarg): a hapless, unfortunate physics professor who’s wife is leaving him for his best friend, his kids don’t respect him, and a student who turns from bribing him into a changed grade to blackmailing him. The script is on point, the metaphors within the text are intriguing and the cast is flawless (with an exceptionally good performance from said physics student, played by David Kang). This won’t have you rolling around laughing – it’s more of a Fargo than a Burn After Reading – but this flick comes highly recommended.
